Developing our Hardworking Practice Nurse Workforce in Western Victoria

It has been a big month for Practice Nurses in western Victoria. The Workforce Development team at Western Victoria PHN (WVPHN) has been working hard to provide quality education opportunities and scholarships to practice nurses across our region. Here are some of the highlights:

Immunisation Update

On 28 September, WVPHN engaged Sonja Elia from Royal Children’s Hospital provided an Immunisation update with 81 practice nurses and nurse practitioners in attendance.

Wound Management Update

On 30 October WVPHN engaged Jane Rice, Director of WoundCare Services to provide an update on wound care, safe practices, support, social interaction for clients at risk, superficial burns management and introduction to newer products. 95 practice nurses and nurse practitioners were in attendance.

These sessions showcase the popularity of our webinar sessions, particularly through the COVID-19 pandemic when we have utilised GoToWebinar for educational events, in place of face-to-face. All of our webinar sessions which include GPs, practice staff and allied health have been extremely well attended with positive feedback on the format, speakers and topics.

The majority of our events are recorded and approved to be on our WVPHN LEARN YouTube channel.

Practice Nurse Scholarships Awarded

WVPHN and The Benchmarque Group were thrilled to notify 28 Practice Nurses in our region that they were successful in gaining sponsorship to undertake the unit ‘Foundations of Immunisation Practice‘ (valued at $95 per student). This unit is the first module in the HESA endorsed nurse immuniser ‘Course in Immunisation Practice in Primary Healthcare‘ (10754NAT) offered by The Benchmarque Group.

This WVPHN workforce development initiative aims to strengthen the capacity of the primary health care workforce in western Victoria to deliver routine immunisations, with a particular focus on childhood vaccinations and preparing for the 2021 influenza season.
