Providing high quality, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a core function of Western Victoria PHN. The number of CPD events provided to support GPs and other primary health providers continues to grow across the region. Over our first six months as Western Victoria PHN, we have delivered 219 CPD sessions with 2378 people attending. CPD topics are selected based on feedback from GPs and other health professionals, as well as identified regional health priorities. All CPD events attract accredited points from Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) and are always available on our website.

The annual 2016 GP Refresher weekend is on again from Saturday 20 - Sunday 21 February at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus. This CPD event is a firm favourite amongst GPs across the region with more than 140 registrations so far this year, with almost 60 GPs attending from outside Geelong including Horsham, Warrnambool. Ballarat, Portland, Avoca, Ararat, Hopetoun, Heywood, Colac, Stawell, Lismore and Nhill.

This program features quality presenters with expertise in their field of speciality, as well as brief updates from health organisations including, Prof. Karen Dwyer, Deputy Head of School, School of Medicine, Deakin University and Epworth Hospital (Geelong) CEO. Needs Assessment service provider and community forums

Western Victoria PHN is focussed on working with health service providers, users and communities to develop and improve access to the right primary health services, in the right place, at the right time. As part of this process, we are conducting our 2016-17 Population Health Planning Needs Assessment, collecting and collating information to identify systems and service development priorities, building on our previous work and knowledge.

Our Needs Assessment is our roadmap about what primary health care our region needs. We develop the Needs Assessment collaboratively with local health organisations and community groups, bringing all that expertise together to develop a shared understanding of what’s really needed in our region.

Our success depends on a collective effort to ensure better health outcomes for all communities in our region.

This is your opportunity to have your say! Please join us and make a positive difference to the region’s primary health system by providing feedback on local health needs, health system issues and service utilisation to inform the prioritisation and commissioning of future health services. Forums have been scheduled across the region. Please forward forum details to community members, individuals or organisations that will have an interest in attending. If you are unable to attend, please email us your input and feedback.

Horsham 6.30pm at Horsham Golf Club, 304 Golf Course Road, Haven

Warrnambool 7pm at Bayside City Plaza, 24-36 Fairy Street

New Requirement Quality Improvement Activity - RACGP

GPs must undertake at least one Quality Improvement (QI) activity during the 2014 -16 triennium. This activity may be chosen from the suite of RACGP inherent QI activities, or developed by an Accredited Provider, or identified by the quality improvement reflection.

Activities the College recognises as inherently QI are:

  • Supervised clinical attachment (SCA)
  • Plan, do, study, act (PDSA)
  • Clinical audit
  • GP research
  • Evidence based medicine journal club (EBMJC)
  • Small group learning (SGL)

For more information go to the RACGP website or contact Helene Gilmore or 0418 491 245 at Western Victoria PHN.

Free online courses for practice staff

Orticare are providing access to free online courses for practice staff covering Alcohol and other Drugs (AOD) and managing difficult behaviours in a health care setting. The courses attract CPD points from the Australian Association of Practice Management (AAPM) and provides relevant information for practice staff, non-medical and nursing staff.

New Australian Government funded support for carers

Australia's 2.7 million carers now have access to a new Australian Government website, Carer Gateway, to support them in their caring roles.  Carer Gateway provides information about the services and support available for people who care for someone with a disability, chronic illness, dementia, mental illness or who are frail due to age.

The Carer Gateway provides a range of information for different types of carers including young carers, older carers, working carers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander carers, culturally and linguistically diverse carers. The website also provides information on:

  • Financial and respite support
  • How to adjust when caring ends
  • Local services such as Commonwealth-funded organisations delivering carer support services through the Service Finder.

Carers can access Carer Gateway or by calling 1800 422 737 from Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm.

GPs and Immunisation Nurses can provide Immunisation Status Certificates

The most common document to prove immunisation status for the purpose of enrolling a child at childcare or kindergarten is an Immunisation History Statement from the ACIR.

Less common, but also acceptable is a document known as an Immunisation Status Certificate that can be provided by a GP or Immunisation Nurse.

An Immunisation Status Certificate for enrolment into kindergarten or childcare for a child on an immunisation catch-up plan must be from a GP or immunisation nurse to finalise enrolment.

Immunisation Status Certificates must contain the same information as an ACIR Immunisation History Statement.  This and other information about immunisations can be found on the health.vic website.

Guide to immunisation catch-ups for 10 - 19 year olds

The Department of Health and Human Services has developed a guide to assist health professionals needing to vaccinate 10 - 19 year olds that have not received vaccinations in the past.

The objective of catch-up vaccinations is to complete a course of age appropriate vaccination and provide optimal protection as quickly as possible. The information and tables contained in the guide will assist in planning a catch-up schedule.
