Description

GPs may refer people with an assessed mental disorder to allied mental health providers for treatment under a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan.  Clients can receive up to 10 sessions per calendar year delivered in a set of up to 6, then 4.

Criteria

GPs can refer people who are being managed under a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan or a Psychiatrist assessment and management plan.
People who are assessed as having a mental disorder as defined in the MBS are eligible for services under this initiative.

Referral Process

GPs that have completed Mental Health Skills Training accredited by the General Practice Mental Health Standards Collaboration (GPMHSC) are able to access items 2715 and 2717 for developing a Mental Health Treatment Plan.

Those GPs who have not completed accredited Mental Health Skills Training will be able to claim under Medicare item numbers 2700 and 2701.

GPs can refer people to Clinical Psychologists, Psychologists, Social Workers and Occupational Therapists who are registered with Medicare Australia.
